Dumb type
Dumb type
Founded in 1984 in Japan by students from different departments in Kyoto City Art College, this multi-disciplinary group in the fullest sense of the word. Today dumb type brings together architects, sound engineers, video directors, dancers, musicians, computer scientists and others. The approach and very composition of the company are completely unique in the world. The boundaries between the live show, the video installation and the visual arts only seek to fade into each other. Among its main productions: Pleasure Life, S/N, ph, (OR), memorandum... An atmosphere of unprecedented opaque uncertainty surrounds us. Asleep or awake, if you try to forget it and transfix your mind, it won’t leave you, like a second skin of anxiety and fear. Feign indifference, you won’t last long; you can’t cross it out as it were a case of someone else’s problems or events separated from you by the television screen. More people than we could imagine are confronted by a feeling of crisis, struggling to find a name for this state. Some describe it as an inexplicable inability, others as a decline in intelligence. However well chosen the expression, words fail us. (...) We have deliberately chosen not to resort to language. We are looking to discover a real communication without using words. Is this possible? Once more, we must call into question the very essence of the show. dumb type Production: dumb type, in co-production with the Centre de Développement Chorégraphique, Toulouse; Le Maillon - Théâtre de Strasbourg; Maison des Arts, Créteil; REDCAT (Roy & Edna Disney/CalArts Theater), Los Angeles; Theater Drama City, Osaka with the support of the Kyoto Art Center and Biwako Hall, Shiga.
